Lá Mara was held on the local patron’s day, Lá Ciaráin, a decades old festival to celebrate the feast day of saint Ciaráin. Lá Mara was organised by Údarás to showcase the marine related business and activities in the Gealtacht area, outline and introduce the plans of Páirc na Mara and showcase the varied marine opportunities that can co-exist in Páirc Na Mara.
This event held presentations from Údarás na Gealtachta CEO, Mícheál Ó hEanaigh on the potential of Páirc Na Mara, discussion from Oliver Tully of the Marine Institute on native oyster restoration, whilst Jim Keogh and Mícheál Mac Monagail explained the use of new technology in Arramara to ensure innovation and sustainability was at the forefront of their business and finally John Breslin presented the research activities that are involved with SmartBay.
They day was also enjoyed by the hundreds of national and secondary school pupils from the Connemara region who were invited to immerse themselves in all things marine related, from seafood to scuba diving. The event was a showcase of the rich tapestry of the Atlantic Coastline, outlining the importance of the marine sector to local communities and businesses as well as having the potential to have an impact on the blue economy at national and international levels with the development of Páirc na mara.
